The Southern Crescent Symphony Orchestra is a community orchestra devoted to meeting the cultural needs of audiences and performers in the Southern Crescent area of Metro Atlanta. Members of the orchestra include professional musicians, music educators, amateur musicians and students, all of whom strive to utilize their full potential in presenting a quality musical product. Performances are held in Spivey Hall at Clayton State University, First Baptist Church of Morrow, and other area venues. The SCSO is conducted by Dr. Richard Bell.

ABOUT THE SOLOISTS

August Bair

vocalist

Since moving from New York to Atlanta in 2018, baritone August Bair has quickly established himself as a favorite new talent in the southeast.  He is seen regularly onstage in local opera company productions, including The Atlanta Opera, and as a featured soloist in liturgical and secular choral productions.  Recent stage and recording highlights have been the spring 2022 release of Georgia State University Choir’s recording, REQUIEM, in which he is the soloist in Faure’s Requiem; singing the roles of Marcello (La Boheme), The Count of Almaviva (Marriage of Figaro), Figaro (Barber of Seville), and Mercutio (Romeo et Juliet) for the Concert Opera and Capital City opera companies; and, his performance as Dr. Malatesta (Don Pasquale) for the Janiec Opera Company in Brevard, North Carolina.

August has enjoyed working as both soloist and chorus member in The Atlanta Opera’s productions of Dead Man Walking, Eugene Onegin, and La Traviata, and as the Father (Hansel & Gretel) for The Atlanta Opera’s Studio Tour.

Savannah Cathey, 

vocalist

Savannah Cathey is an Atlanta native Soprano. She most recently was a Fellow at Sewanee OperaFest where she was seen on stage in scenes as the title role of Norma, Donna Elvira, and Angelica from Handel’s Orlando. She also just finished touring with the Atlanta Opera Studio Tour playing the role of the Mother and Sandman in 

Hansel and Gretel. 

In the summer of 2021, Mrs. Cathey was a participant in the Sewanee Summer OperaFest where she performed as Alice Ford in Falstaff. She was a Young Artist with the 2021 Sewanee Winter Opera Program and a Fellow in the 2020 CoOperative  Program. 

While attending Georgia State University (2018-20), she performed the roles of Candace in The Village Singer, the title role in Suor Angelica and Fiordiligi in Cosi Fan Tutte at Harrower Opera Workshop. 

She has won acclaim with regional and national competitions, including the 2022 "Bernstein Award" at the Orpheus Vocal Competition, 2020 District Encouragement Award from the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, 2019 Winner of the Opera Guild of Atlanta Vocal Scholarship Competition and 2019

Winner of the Atlanta Music Club Competition. 

Mrs. Cathey earned her Masters degree from Georgia State University and her Bachelors degree from Berry College.

Rick Massengale, 

piano

Rick Massengale is a native Atlantan with a Bachelors of Music Education and a Masters of Organ Performance from Georgia State University. His organ teachers included Tom Brumby, Ron Price and Bill Weaver. He studied voice with Dr. James Bowers, Peter Harrower and Dr. Franklin Green. His choral experience was as accompanist under Mark Rusch with the Peachtree Barbershop Chorus, Dr. John Haberlin at Georgia State and Dr. Franklin Green with the Georgia Singers. He started directing church choirs at age 19 and was Director of Music at Fayetteville First UMC from 1999 to 2022. While doing graduate work at Southern Seminary, he was tenor soloist at St. Paul’s UMC in Louisville, KY. In addition to this, Rick is much in demand as a jazz pianist and is half of the popular duo Those Guys that performs regularly in the area. Rick Massengale’s Natural Piano is an album of original music available on most streaming services. Rick has performed several concerts at Spivey Hall as organ soloist with the Southern Crescent Symphony and the Southern Crescent Chorale.
